    5. Pre-Lab Exercise

If you are having severe difficulties completing the Pre-Lab Quiz, you might want to try the Pre-Lab Exercise. The Pre-Lab Exercise prompts the student through each aspect of the Numerical Question, highlighting the chemical formulas and theories that govern the solution of each problem.

To open the Pre-Lab Exercise, hit the link on the homepage (Be sure to QUIT the Pre-Lab Quiz if you are logged into it.)
Sign-onto this system the same way you do to the Pre-Lab Quiz.
Within each problem of the numerical question:

Upon hitting the SUBMIT button you will be prompted to correct any incorrect responses by the prescence of a Question Mark. Clicking on the button will initiate a sequence of steps to aid you in solving the problem.
The PANIC button will take you to the portion of the chapter directly related in concept to the problem you are trying to solve.
Once you've completed the calculations and hit the SUBMIT button, the system will let you know which answers are incorrect. You may then click on the question icon next to each answer for a clue to solving the problem. Once you have completed the problem, hit the GO button, which will immediately let you know if your answer is correct. If it is correct, you must reenter your value into the appropriate box and hit the submit button again.

    7. Ethics
  • Students are expected to complete the Pre-Lab Quiz on their own, working in-groups is strongly discouraged. You should read your lab manual, text and course notes before attempting the Pre-Lab Quiz. The Pre-Lab Quiz tests your mastery of concepts that are essential to successfully and safely completing the lab. You cannot copy someone else's answers for the Numerical Question, as your values for the given data are significantly different from anyone else's. Similarly, you will receive a set of 8 Multiple Choice questions different from everyone else's.

    9.FAQ's
    Multiple Choice
  • Can I change my answers to the Multiple Choice Questions?
  • You can change your answers to the Multiple Choice Questions before submitting them by hitting either the PREVIOUS QUESTION or NEXT QUESTION buttons to move forward or backward through the set of 8 questions.

  • If I fail the Multiple Choice, do I have to logoff and re-logon to retake the Multiple Choice?
No. Once notified that you have failed the Multiple Choice, simple hit the GET QUESTIONS button to get another try. You will be given a new set of 8 questions, and this attempt will count as another trial, diminishing your chance at winning the Pre-Lab Quiz.

    Numerical Question
  • Am I provided with all the information I need to complete the Numerical Question?
  • You are given all the numerical information you will need to complete the Numerical Question. You must use your knowledge or formulas and concepts learned in General Chemistry lecture to complete these problems.

  • I'm having problems completing the Numerical Question. My answer is correct by the system keeps telling me its wrong, what's happening?
Like any chemistry quiz, you must be mindful of significant digits, and of units. You might also want to examine the values of your constants, such as molecular weight, to make sure they are the correct values. If you are still having problems, reread your lab manual and/or textbook. If you are still having difficulty, consult the lab instructors during open hours.

I correctly answered [one] part of the Numerical Question; do I have to retake the entire question?
No. Simply recalculate and reenter values for those the system identified as incorrect, resubmit these and hopefully they will be correct.

I just can't seem to solve the numerical question; may I ask a fellow student for assistance?
Completing the Pre-Lab Quiz is your responsibility. The Pre-Lab Quiz is intended to ensure that you are properly prepared for the lab. If you have having troubles, this indicates that you are not familiar with the concepts of the lab. You may want to examine the Pre-Lab Exercise, which prompts the user through the completion of the Numerical Question. Working in-groups is discouraged, but you are encouraged to seek the assistance of your professor or of the University Learning Centre (2nd floor University Hall, 973-596-2992).

    Sequence
  • Can I take the Multiple Choices first and then complete the Numerical Question?
  • No. You must complete the Numerical Question first, before you can take the Multiple Choices.
  • Trials
  • Is there a limit to the number of times I can logon?
  • No. If you are a registered student of Chem. 124, you can logon as many times as you wish. However, each time you attempt the Multiple Choice, counts as another trial. While this does not count against you, the Winner Award is given to the student who passes the Pre-Lab Quiz with the minimum number of trials.

  • Does the system kick me off if I have been idle for an extended period of time?
The system will not kick you off, regardless of how long you spend online. However, if you require an extended period of time, this indicates that you are not entirely familiar with all the concepts and formulas involved in the respective Quiz. You should review your course notes, lab manual, text or any other sources of information to assist you in completing the Pre-Lab Quiz. As a courtesy to other students, logoff if you are not active, it slows the system.

    Quit
  • How do I quit the system?
  • You can quit the lab anytime by hitting the QUIT LAB button in either the Numerical Question or Multiple Choice panels.
